WD-50

After a really, really hard day, we went to WD-50 (taking Samir there for his long-past birthday...it took months to even track down a 6:30 reservation!). We all got the current ("new") 12-course tasting menu; Priya used to work with the sous-chef and she sent us out a bunch of extra stuff (three extra courses from the "from the vault" tasting menu of their classic dishes!) and comped us our fancy cocktail drinks!

everything was incredibly great. I wasn't a big fan of the heavy licorice-centered dish, but that's because, you know, black licorice.

pictures obviously don't do a lot of this stuff justice, especially iphone pictures. one of my favorite dishes was the chicken-pot-pie thing, which just looks like a bundle of carrots in the pic. there was this herbal-flavored yolk that had an insanely rich taste/texture (very similar to the yolk cylinder that comes with the eggs benedict from the old menus)...it must have been cooked for hours. also "peas" that were actually carrots covered in pea-powder, super-umami chicken confit, etc.

the meringue ice cream in the smores dessert was also insane. tasted like toasted meringue/toasted marshmallow but also wholly like ice cream. and the gjetost-filled bonbons...? wow.
